We'll look to finish on a high: Parthiv Patel

Thehindu: Parthiv Patel, captaining Kochi Tuskers Kerala in the absence of Mahela Jayawardane, admitted that the side will be playing for little more than pride when it takes on CSK in its final league match on Wednesday.

“We still have (tiny) chance, but yes, it is very slim. We want to finish on a high,” said the former CSK player, in the pre-match press conference.

While KTK may well be out of contention by the time the match ends on Wednesday, Patel chose to concentrate on the positives.

“Six wins for a franchisee (so far) in its first year without too many big names is not bad,” said Patel, admitting that the outcome could have been different had the side played more consistently. “We have played some very good cricket but we have played some very poor cricket as well.”The stand-in skipper hinted that spin-wizard Muttiah Muralitharan, who has bowled just 7.5 overs for his new franchise, might get a look-in for the match.

“The wicket has always turned and we need an extra spinner for sure. Jayawardane's absence means we will have to make a few changes,” said the southpaw.

CSK coach Stephen Fleming said that the team standing on the cusp of an all-win record at home would not put any pressure on the side.

“We have worked very hard to win at home and it has really been the state of the competition that has driven us. Winning at home is a bit of a bonus and hopefully we can finish without a loss here,” said Fleming.
The Kiwi also said that CSK would be keyed up for the encounter in an attempt to finish second or above in the league.

“We have thought about it (finishing either first or second) and any team that has not, has obviously not been thinking too far ahead. We want to get a perfect run to the final, which is here (in Chennai). It is about positioning yourself well for the final and not riding your luck,” he concluded.

Gomez Stars as Tuskers Down Knight Riders

Cricinfo: Kochi Tuskers Kerala 156 for 5 (Jayawardene 55, Unadkat 2-25) beat Kolkata Knight Riders 139 for 7 (Morgan 66, Gomez 2-14 by 17 runs

A disciplined performance in the field and an explosive 35 off 19 balls from Brad Hodge helped Kochi Tuskers overcome Kolkata Knight Riders in the last match at the Nehru Stadium this IPL season.

Hodge's last over blitz, in which he took 21 runs off countryman Brett Lee, proved to be the difference between the two sides, as Kochi defended 156 by 17 runs. In the chase, RP Singh and Sreesanth failed to get the same kind of movement that Brett Lee extracted early in the Kochi innings. Jacques Kallis and Eoin Morgan didn't have to take many risks early on as there were many poor deliveries that were smacked to the boundary. In the first three overs, the bulk of the short and wide ones came from RP Singh.

R Vinay Kumar and Prasanth Parameswaran pulled back the chase before it raged out of control with a selection of back of a length deliveries that proved difficult to get away. Although they kept the boundaries down, they didn't trouble the batsmen much and failed to get a breakthrough until after the halfway stage, when Kolkata were well set. Kallis was the senior partner and easily outscored Morgan in that phase. Seven times in the first ten overs Kallis stole the strike at the end of the over.

Eoin Morgan cracks a ball through point, Kochi Tuskers Kerala v Kolkata Knight Riders, IPL 2011, Kochi, May 5, 2011
Just as Kallis looked as though he had grown roots, Raiphi Gomez rattled Kolkata with a double strike in his second over. He bowled Kallis with a legcutter and had Gautam Gambhir caught in the covers off consecutive balls, which left Morgan to assume the senior role. Manoj Tiwary could not last long, and Yusuf Pathan was expected to counterattack, but he and Morgan were frustrated by Gomez's variations and Parameswaran's accurate fuller deliveries.

Sreesanth let the noose loosen, giving Morgan back-to-back boundaries but Vinay Kumar was on hand to tighten it. Confusions between Morgan and Yusuf mounted in Vinay's last over, and Morgan was run out when both batsmen ended up at the wicketkeeper's end.

It brought Brett Lee to the crease, in poetic justice for the last over he bowled, which went for 21. There were 25 to get off the last over of Kolkata's innings. Lee was run-out and the task proved too steep.

Kochi's innings was anchored by a third-wicket partnership between Mahela Jayawardene and Michael Klinger before being given momentum at the death by Hodge. It didn't look as though Kochi would get over the 150-run mark, especially after the way things started. Lee's first over was a whole bag of peaches. He got impressive away movement and started the innings with a maiden.

Some success seemed inevitable after the start Kolkata got and it came from Jaidev Unadkat, although he hardly deserved it. He banged one in, too short and too wide outside off that Brendon McCullum chased and his fine edge nestled in Kallis' hands at slip.

Parthiv Patel came in at No. 3 and opened his account with two stunning boundaries. He looked energetic and confident in his strokeplay and dealt with Unadkat's bouncer and the introduction of spin, in the form of Iqbal Abdulla, with relative ease. Surprisingly, it was the short ball that undid him, when he charged down the track and miscued a pull shot to midwicket.

The stage was set for Jayawardene to play an innings of authority and, with Klinger at the other end, he did exactly that. They played creative cricket, managing a boundary off five of the seven overs they were together for and pushed each other to take singles before Klinger holed out. When Abdulla got the wicket of Ravindra Jadeja for eight, Kochi were being pegged back and some impetus was needed.

The floodgates were opened with Jayawardene's six over long leg at the start of the 17th over and Kochi put on 54 runs in the final four overs, with Hodge's fireworks yielding almost half of those.

Home-grown Tusker Parameswaran begins his charge

Prasanth Parameswaran reacts after dismissing Virender Sehwag,
Delhi Daredevils v Kochi Tuskers Kerala, IPL 2011

Chasing 141, Kochi were home with five overs and seven wickets to spare. Kochi batsmen got off to a flyer with openers Brendon McCullum and Michael Klinger gathering runs in a jiffy. The two dealt in boundaries as the team total jumped to 61 in five overs.

However, Delhi did manage to break their stand on the first ball of the sixth over when paceman Morne Morkel despatched Kiwi Brendon McCullum on 37 with Umesh Yadav performing the final honours at mid-on. Kochi were 61/1 at the stage.

The other opener Klinger departed on the first ball of the 8th over when Roelof van der Merwe trapped him leg-before on 18. Kochi were batting on 71 at the stage.

There was some more reason to cheer for Delhi when Kochi captain Mahela Jayawardene ended up getting run out on the last ball of the 10th over when the team total was 89.

But Parthiv Patel (37 n.o) and Aussie Brad Hodge (24 n.o.) helped the team cross the 141 runs target on the last ball of the 15th over.

Delhi innings
Kochi restricted Delhi to 140/6 during the 41st IPL match of IPL-4.
Venugopal Rao's 40 that saved the team from dire straits was the only bright spot in the Delhi innings that saw batsmen walk in and walk out in quick successions.

Earlier, Kochi captain Mahela Jayawardene won the toss and elected to field. Delhi lost their opener and captain Virender Sehwag in the third over off left-arm bowler Prasanth Parameswaran on 15. Delhi were 21/1 post his fall.

But that wasn't the end of the trail as Delhi lost more wickets and at regular intervals as Kochi bowlers pressed harder. The other opener David Warner departed in the sixth over off S Sreesanth followed by Naman Ojha, who fell to RP Singh cheaply when the Delhi score was 43.
Finally, Delhi boy Yogesh Nagar and Venugopal Rao provided the much-needed stability to the Delhi batting. While Rao, an accomplished batsman, kept the runs coming, Nagar provided him with the required support.

However, in the 15th over Rao's support was lost as R Vinay Kumar got the better of Nagar on 18 after the duo had added 54 runs for the fourth wickets. And Delhi fell to 97/4.

With Nagar back in the dugout, Rao lost his rhythm and fell to Parameswaran on the first ball of the 18th over when batting on 40. A top edge off his bat was easily lapped up by RP Singh a mid-wicket and Delhi were down to 116/5.

Delhi's T20 specialist from Down Under Travis Birt was the next victim of Kochi attack that saw R Vinay Kumar up his tally to two.

Still Delhi manage to score 140/6 in their allotted 20 overs

Giant-killers Kochi Tuskers - Another Exciting Win over Kolkata Knight Riders

Kochi Tuskers Kerala 132 for 7 (Jadeja 29, Jayawardene 25, Yusuf 3-20, Shakib 3-28) beat Kolkata Knight Riders 126 for 9 (M Tiwary 46, RP 2-25, Jadeja 2-25) by six runs

Kochi Tuskers Kerala won a battle of attrition against Kolkata Knight Riders on a slow Eden Gardens pitch that aided the spinners, defending a modest total by six runs, their third win on the trot and one that took them to third position on the points table. The wicket was expected to have played better than the low-and-slow one turned out for the game against Rajasthan Royals. It did not play as low, but was as slow, making it difficult for batsmen and a delight for the spinners.

After Yusuf Pathan and Shakib Al Hasan had taken six wickets for 48 runs between them to restrict Kochi to 132, Kolkata's powerful batting line-up would have fancied the modest chase. But Kochi had three spinners themselves, in Muttiah Muralitharan, Ramesh Powar and Ravindra Jadeja. The trio did not take as many wickets as the Kolkata spinners had, but stifled the runs nevertheless as the pressure got to the Kolkata batsmen.

Ironically, in a game dominated by spin, what hurt Kolkata in the end was that they lost wickets to the fast bowlers at the start, and Kochi did not. The first three overs from the Kolkata fast bowlers had gone for 26 without any wicket, the first four from the Kochi seamers went for only 20, and produced two big wickets, that of Jacques Kallis and Gautam Gambhir.

Kochi Tuskers Kerala Stun Champions Chennai Kings

Kochi Tuskers Kerala 135-3 (McCullum 47) beat
Chennai Super Kings 131-4 (Raina 50) by 7 wickets

Ravi Jadeja played a starring role for the second match in a row as the Kochi Tuskers Kerala followed up a win over the Mumbai Indians with an equally impressive victory over reigning Indian Premier League champions Chennai Super Kings.

Jadeja was unbeaten on 16 in just six balls as his side won a rain-affected encounter by seven wickets with two overs to spare, closing on 135 for three in reply to the Super Kings' 131 for four in 17 overs.
The adjusted target to be little obstacle to the Tuskers, for whom Brendon McCullum (47) and Parthiv Patel (34) also batted superbly well in front of their home crowd in Kochi, Jadeja hitting the winning runs - as he did so against the Mumbai Indians one match ago.

In between the rain, Chennai reached their score thanks to a fine knock of 50 in 40 balls from Suresh Raina but his run out in the 16th over knocked them back. Murali Vijay cracked an eye-catching 28 in 18 balls after Michael Hussey fell early for eight while Subramaniam Badrinath made 19 in 17 balls before he was trapped in fron tby Raiphi Gomez.

Ever-dependable Mahendra Singh Dhoni hit 15 not out in 13 balls while Albie Morkel hit one big straight six to be unbeaten on nine as RP Singh and Tissara Perera also picked up a wicket.

McCullum then led Kochi's charge, slamming three huge sixes and hitting four fours on his way to 47 in 33 balls while Mahela Jayawardene played his part, making 16 in 11 deliveries with two fours and a maximum before he looped Ravi Ashwin to Anirudha Srikkanth for a simple catch.

McCullum was also caught when he too failed to get Ashwin away, but thanks to an excellent half-century partnership between himself and Patel, Kochi were always on target for the win.

Despite Patel's wicket, which fell when he pulled Doug Bollinger to Srikkanth at deep square leg, Kochi finished the game in style with Jadeja providing the fireworks and Brad Hodge the glue - the experienced Australia not out on 19 in 14 balls, making amends for an earlier drop in the field.

The result saw the Tuskers leapfrog the Super Kings into fourth place in the table

Kochi Tuskers Kerala pick up first win in style against Mumbai Indians

Kochi Tuskers Kerala won a thriller against the mighty Mumbai Indians to pick up their first IPL victory on Friday at the Wankhede Stadium. Sachin’s century went in vain as Kochi defeated his team by 8 wickets with six balls remaining.

Answering the 182 for 2-carnage by the Mumbai Indians, Mahela came out with definite plans promoting himself as an opener. This worked well for Kochi as Mahela and McCullum opening wicket stand amassed 128 runs in 13.5 overs slamming all the Mumbai bowlers, especially Lasith Malinga and Kieron Pollard.
But Malinga had his revenge by bowling out the Kochi skipper Mahela Jayawardene with an inswinging yorker and Brendon McCullum with a fuller in his come back spell.

Mahela cracked 56 from 36 balls and McCullum slammed 81 runs from 60 balls.

McCullum hit three fours and Jayawardene one in a Slingshot over forcing Sachin to withdrew him from the attack early into the match. Pollard also took good beating as the Kochi batsmen allowed none of the bowlers to find their rhythm.

Mahela’s all the decisions worked today, he promoted Ravindra Jadeja ahead of experienced Brad Hodge and the youngster hammered a 11-ball 25 and also fired Ali Murtaza for two sixes to win the match in style for the Kochi.

Earlier, he won the toss and sent the Mumbai Indians to bat, which raised some eyebrows as Sachin Tendulkar and Ambati Rayudu slammed the Kochi Tuskers’ bowlers to power Mumbai Indians to 182.
Sachin cracked a 66 ball ton with 12 fours and three sixes after Ambati sacrificed his wicket in the fourth ball of the final over. Ambati slammed to 53 in 33 balls with the help of three fours and four sixes.

Mumbai Indians lost their opener Davy Jacobs for 12 runs after Raiphi Gomez delivery rattled the South African’s stumps.

Vinay Kumar then came close to the fame of taking the Little Master’s wicket when a stunner from him skidded on to the MI skipper’s pads. But the lbw was wrongly denied by the umpire as the replays later showed that the ball was on course to hit the stumps.

Luck did not come Kochi’s way as Sachin and Ambati were given more lives. Kochi missed a run-out chance and a catch that could have ended the 116-run second wicket partnership way too early.
Kochi came into the game with three changes, replacing Muttiah Muralitharan, S.Sreesanth and V.V.S. Laxman with Thisara Perera, Ramesh Powar and Kedar Jadhav.

Mumbai Indians also made one change by resting James Frankling and including Andrew Symonds.
